An excerpt from Chrysalis, a Young Adult love story
Her father’s face reddened, turning from polite curiosity to smoldering rage when he saw Tom standing next to Ashley. Reaching back for his lunch kit he started towards his wife, pointing with his thumb. “What’s he doing here?” Not waiting for an answer he continued his march towards the couple. “Listen boy—”
“Tom.”
Oh, shit, Ashley cringed.
“What?” Angus sputtered.
“My name is Tom.” Tom held his hand out to shake. “I believe you knew my dad Ron. Ronny Peterson. He worked shift at the Mill a few years back before the big layoffs.”
“Walk-out,” her father corrected, as he always did. There was a long pause. “Yes, of course I know your dad,” his gravelled voice had returned to normal. Ashley noted a look of grudging admiration flitted across his etched features. Angus respected men not easily bullied. “I also went to school with your mom.”
Tom turned to Angus. “Well it was nice to see you, Angus.” He held his hand out to her mom. “And you, Pam." Another pause as he turned to her. "Ashley. See you at school.” He smiled down at her with fierce meaning reflected in the blue depths of his eyes. Just before he turned away, he winked, his dimpled cheek framed his smirk.
Oh, what? What was that? Ashley watched him through lowered lashes wishing the heat from her face would consume her in flames.
