“I recall,” she said smiling up at her husband as they walked hand and hand along the side of the road, forever lovers. “When I first met the boy, he was shy …”

His mouth quirked up at the edges remembering being that young man. “That was just a ploy,” her husband cut in with a wink.

“Well, I believe he was shy … about some things,” she continued laughing softly admiring the autumn colors of the forest to either side. Her mind filled with their shared adventures of youth where they traversed and tramped through these very woods. Were they eager to get away from something or were they exploring nature, she wondered. More like exploring each other.

“About some things maybe,” he chuckled deep in his throat, his blue eyes twinkling and his brows drew together in contemplation. “About other’s … just intent.”

The rich golds and reds of the maritime forest forever evoked a sense of harmony within each of them. Though they had traveled much during their long life together, it was always here that they were home. “I guess it is no wonder then that we would end up walking this road, here and now,” her husband continued rubbing his thumb along the inside of palm as he switched his gaze to peer into the depths of forest for signs of wildlife. She would be surprised if he would actually see something, but he always looked none the less. There was a sense of contentment between them – a sense of peace. “Are you ready?”

She looked down at their linked hands and noticed the large age spots. Where had those come from? How old the hands looked. And those wrinkles. It wasn’t possible. She peered up at his face and age was confirmed in the lines of his brow and the silver of his thinning hair. His hair, once so long and wild had always been thick. Now his hair was cropped short and neat, with no noticeable baldness. Still a handsome face, she noticed, loving the deep blue of his eyes, magnified slightly through his glasses and the deep wrinkles that crinkled even more as he grinned down at her. He switched her hand into his left while he placed his right hand, as was his habit, at the base of her her neck to rub the cords gently and smooth her hair back over her ear before once again taking her hand in his right. “Yes, fine,” she smiled up at him matching his step into the unknown of the waiting darkness from the canopy of trees.

She was scared but only for a moment until he pulled her close to his side. “You are never alone, my love.” She squeezed his fingers back and again looked up into his face and feel his reassurance. There was no need for more words. They had known each other all of their lives. One look could say all that needed to be said.
